How NTDesigns Researches Renovation Costs
Every cost figure on NTDesigns is researched, cross-checked, and date-stamped. This page explains exactly how we build our renovation cost guides — what sources we use, how we verify numbers, and the honest limits of our data.
Where Our Numbers Come From
We compile cost data from multiple independent Australian sources:
- Australian supplier pricing — published prices from major hardware retailers, building suppliers, and specialist trade suppliers.
- Trade-quote platforms — advertised price ranges and completed-job data from Australian quoting marketplaces.
- Industry rate guides — published rate schedules from Australian industry associations and trade bodies.
- Government and regulatory sources — where relevant (for example, licensing thresholds and mandatory insurance rules that affect project costs).
We never rely on a single source for any published figure. Every cost range is built from at least two to three independent data points.
Our Verification Process
- Collect: We gather current pricing from Australian suppliers and trade platforms for each project type.
- Cross-check: Figures are compared across sources. If sources disagree sharply, we investigate why (different scope, region, or inclusions) before publishing.
- Range, not false precision: Renovation costs vary by city, materials, access, and scope. We publish realistic ranges — never a single misleading “average”.
- Date-stamp: Every guide carries a “Prices verified” date so you can see exactly how fresh the data is.
- Re-verify: Major cost guides are reviewed and refreshed at least annually, and sooner when market conditions shift materially.
City and State Differences
Renovation costs are not the same everywhere in Australia. Labour rates, material availability, and regulatory requirements differ by state and city — Sydney and Melbourne typically cost more than Adelaide or Hobart, for example. Where we have reliable state-level data, our guides call it out. Where we don’t, we say so rather than guessing.
Independence: No One Can Buy a Number
Our cost data is compiled independently. No tradesperson, supplier, or advertiser can influence a published figure. If a source has a commercial interest in the number it publishes, we treat it with extra scrutiny or exclude it.
Honest Limitations
We publish ranges, not quotes. Your actual cost will depend on:
- Your city and even your suburb (labour rates vary locally).
- Site access, existing conditions, and structural surprises found during the job.
- Material and finish choices — the same project can legitimately cost 2–8x depending on specification.
- Timing — trade availability and material prices move with the market.
All prices are in Australian dollars and include GST unless stated otherwise. Figures are estimates to help you budget and compare quotes — always get at least three written quotes from licensed tradespeople before committing.
Corrections
Prices move and mistakes happen. If you spot an error in any guide, contact us — we investigate every report and update promptly. Significant corrections are noted on the article itself.
